A passionate, intelligent novel about women loving women across cultural and racial differences. The main story line traces through flashbacks the relationship between the narrator - a white woman from the Netherlands living in the United States - and her African-American lover, Lesley. Woven around this the narrator explores her relationship with her parents during World War II in the Netherlands, as well as in later life, and her growing friendship with a former lover, Ene.
Autumn Sea is shaped by the metaphor of a journey - the journey to the States, the lovers' journeys to the Near East, India and Europe and the interior journeys to forgiveness, power and wisdom.
