Ayurveda and the Mind: The Healing of Consciousness
Motilal Banarsidass, 2005 - 360 pages
Ayurveda and the Mind is perhaps the first book published in the West that explores specifically the psychological aspect of this great system. The book explores how to heal our minds on all levels from the subconscious to the superconscious, along with the role of diet, impressions, mantra, meditation, yoga and many other methods to create wholeness. Dr. Frawley has once again demonstrated his unique talent of digesting ancient Vedic knowledge and feeding us this understanding which nourishes our body, mind and soul.

Ayurveda, the Indian traditional Vedic medicine is one of the oldest systems of Therapeutics and Human pathology .It is not restricted to the body, or mind-body complex but extends its realm to human and cosmic body, mind, intellect, spiritual relationships and the oneness of everything with everything. At one stage of advaitha with the nature the observer and the observed merge into a “single significant whole” (to borrow Einstein’s words).Relation of Yoga,Ayurveda, Indian philosophy,Mathematics and Musical healing I had dealt with in my book Ragachikitsa (Readworthy Publications.New Delhi 2008) and here Frawley says : Ayurveda is the healing branch of Yogic science ,the therapeutic branch of the Yoga, and Yoga is the spiritual aspect of Ayurveda with which I agree totally. He explains the relation of the Ayurvedic system to the system of thanthra which uses tools like colours, gems, sounds (Music comes under this),aromas(fragrance) lights (deepam) ,guru, manthra, symbol of deity and meditation (Upasana). The spiritual practice of thanthra and temple worship , is thus part of a healing technique. The levels of healing is not just treatment of diseases after they manifest. But prevention of disease by a lifestyle, by environmental protection, both physical and mental ,at home, at workplace and in society reducing stress and increasing immunity. The third level is creating awareness and developing awareness of these preventive lifestyle among members of society , in a geographic area. Thus India system of spiritual practice shows how well the awareness programmes of ancient educators had worked for thousands of years to take root deeply in a people’s psyche. The awareness programmes progress to the 4th stage of development of Intellectual and spiritual faculties –logic, sciences etc of India denote the intellectual development of a people and Yoga denotes the spiritual achievement which is the last stage of development of a human race. This happened in India with Kapila, thousands of years before Rama .Thus the system of Ayrveda is as old as Kapila, and Chyavana ,sages who lived several millennia before. The attainment of the highest consciousness is the Advaitha experience which these sages had reached , and which continued even to the times of Sankaracharya without a break in continuity of the Guruparampara. The yogic experience is a unique experience for each person (who cares for attaining that) and is transferred by generations of people to their successors.
The samkhya philosophy recognize three guna (thriguna) for prakruthi and as part of prakruthi we too have them in different proportions which determine our thridosha , the basic reason for our constitution and our diseases. Vata,Pittha and kapha are thridosha in Ayurveda.
Frawleys book is a basic text for a beginner .So he explains each of the vatha ,pitha and kapha in detail for easy understanding of readers in simple language.Vaatha is wind which moves along with its media (ether) and represents the Vaayumandala around earth. All spaces , including body spaces and cellular spaces within us are included in the term media or aakaasa .It also involves all spacetime media in which thousands of stars and planets function.Term aakaasa as media of everything is thus the spacetime continuum as well as the broader medium (unmanifested to us) in which entire spacetime continuum resides, functions and dissolves into.It cannot be translated as the ether/sky of the present concept. The vatha in subcellular spaces ,in capillaries, in electrical potential of our nervous system is our Sakthi (power) of life and when it is blocked , disease of that particular part occur. This is the concept of Ayurveda about vatha. And vatha being the energy of life, the Praanavaayu Oxygen in our cells , the concept is scientific .
Pittha is that which cooks and digests. It is in all body fluids, blood, hot liquids and water content of body assimilating food,of ideas (in our brain/intellect/nervous energy) and fire in us.Heat ,light ,sensory perceptions and cellular metabolism giving energy
This is the most clarity I've received on this topic, and meets the needs of my Spiritual Journey. I love Gregg Braden and learned from his "Science of Miracles DVD" a couple of weeks ago, which led me to Dr. Deepak Chopra and am studying his teachings (just finished Journey to the Boundless)and more of his materials are arriving tomorrow. However, under the auspices of "intention" to learn more, I was led to this reading as well, also discovering that the learning Center is in Sante Fe, and I live in Albuquerque. I'm ordering this book now! My background is "born again Christian" since Oct 15th, 1983, and although I've demonstrated the "works of Jesus" in healing of my body and others, I seek the detailed truths about what one is, our connection with the Universe, the consciousness levels/layers etc., in order that I truly make a positive difference in this world, that I positively/effortlessly manifest PEACE, HARMONY, LAUGHTER, LOVE, throughout my life, and the lives of people all over the world. I want to be, do, have my purpose on this earth manifest in the most powerful way bringing elightenment and joy to others! I love all of you who have greatly contributed to my Spiritual evolvement/unfoldment. I love you all!!
