A farm boy, Ray went to school in Robbinsville. After graduation he joined the US Navy, and eventually served aboard the USS Midway and USS Coral Sea, two aircraft carriers. During his enlistment, he continued his educational process, visited many foreign countries, and valued the cultural education he got during his tours around the world.
