A poetic masterpiece that is both tragic and empowering!
By Dr Nicola Davies
'Beyond Survivor' was written by a truly inspiring man, a man who went through painful experience after painful
experience by the people who should have been protecting him. Yet, through this pain has emerged a a compassionate, intelligent, articulate, talented, and amazing human being who has risen from the ashes of CSA to share his story with others. The honesty and raw emotion within this selection of writings is both tragic and empowering and a must read for CSA survivors, professionals working with CSA survivors, and anyone wanting insight into the trauma caused by CSA. Jan Frayne has not only broken the silence often surrounding CSA, but he has also taken a huge step for the many men who have endured pain and suffering at the hands of people who should have known better. While male CSA is gaining more recognition, it still has a huge way to go - and Jan Frayne is surely assisting with this through his courageous writings. Being asked to provide the foreward to this poetic masterpiece is one of the biggest honours I have ever received. I now look forward to seeing the book go on to help and inspire many more people to not only survive CSA, but to thrive!

About the author (2012)

I am a male survivor of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). I love words, written, spoken, and unspoken. For so many years my voice was not heard, I expressed myself through my writing. As soon as I was able to read and write, I immersed myself in books. I was able to escape through the writings of others and eventually through my own attempts. Writing enabled me to express the pain, and the shame, of what I experienced. It later helped me to cleanse myself, to heal through the medium of writing. I seem to have lived an early life surrounded by abuse of some sort. At a very early age, I was sexually abused by my grandfather. This went on for about twelve years. Others were invited to use me as they wished. There was also mental, emotional, and physical abuse from other family members. My body was almost broken, my mind fractured, but no one seemed to notice. I grew up thinking it was my fault, I deserved it. Male survivors live within a society where a stigma surrounds the abuse of boys. It took me a long time to find my voice, to be able to share the horrors that tormented me for over three decades. I hope my words help you to understand.
