About the author (1980)

Philip Norman was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1953. He received a BA in music and English in 1975, a MA in musicology in 1977, and a PhD in musicology in 1984 from the University of Canterbury. As a composer, he has composed and arranged well over 200 pieces including Footrot Flats and Love off the Shelf. As a writer, he compiled three editions of the Bibliography of New Zealand Compositions and wrote Douglas Lilburn: His Life and Music, which won the biography category in the 2007 Montana Book Awards.
