About the author (1960)

Charlotte Zolotow, formerly Charlotte Gertrude Shapiro, was born June 26, 1915 in Norfolk, Virginia. Formerly an editor and publisher with what is now known as HarperCollins, she is best-known for writing more than 90 children's books. Zolotow began attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1929. She studied Swiss child psychologist, Jean Piaget's, developmental theories and also studied writing. Zolotow states that her studies help her "unite" her interest in art, writing, and child development. In 1998, the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) at the Univeristy of Wisconsin - Madison's School of Education established the Charlotte Zolotow Award. The Charlotte Zolotow Award is an American literary award presented annually for outstanding picture book writing published in the United States in the preceding year. Zolotow has two children: writer, Crescent Dragonwagon and poker tournament chamption, Stephen Zolotow. She was formerly married to the late Maurice Zolotow.
