I am reviewing my complimentary copy of "Bird Nest" by Jack Waggoner as a member of the Dorrance book review team. Visit Dorrance.com to find out how you can join in the fun.
This is the
best written and most exciting book that I can ever remember reading. It is riveting from the first paragraph. Here is an example from the Prologue:
"The heinous horror of a nuclear explosion cannot be comprehended by the mind of
mortal man. There is no reference point in human understanding, not even when standing
offshore in a sailing ship watching Krakatoa disintegrate before one's eyes, feeling the heat
and watching the red-hot rocks fall with a hissing splash into the blue water."
A nuclear bomb was planted in a huge stadium, which was built specifically to host the XXIX Olympics in China. Hundreds of thousands of people, guests, athletes, vendors and technicians,
were in attendance during the closing ceremonies. On Sunday, August 24, 2008, at 1505 hours, Beijing, the crowd cheered as the closing ceremonies entered the second hour. One minute later, over 200,00 people were dead! So was every other living creature within 1.5 km. The stadium itself was just a pile of ashes.
If you are looking for a book to help you fall asleep at night, then DON't buy "Bird Nest". But if you want an outstanding piece of literature that you would be proud to have in your private library, order this book now.
