Reissue of a title first published in 1989. Its main focus is the period 1963 to 1988 and the achievements of such writers as Mudrooroo Narogin, Kevin Gilbert and Oodgeroo Noonuccal. One of the TStudies in Australian Literature' series, it won the 1990 Walter McRae Russell Award of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature. The author is also the co-editor of TPaperbark: A collection of Black Australian writings' (1990).
