Calusa! is a historical fiction based upon extensive research of both the temple-mound early inhabitants of Florida as the encounter the first Spanish explorers. This is a true story about a young 15 year old cabin boy, Juan Ortiz, was captured, tortured, and lived among the Calusa for nine years. Calusa! is the first book in a series which follows the expedition in its encounters with many tribes.Ortiz was discovered by the De Soto expedition and was instrumental in guiding and acting as interpreter for De Soto and his men over a 10 state region they named, "La Florida."
