Cherry Ames encounters one of her strangest cases while working as a staff nurse at Hilton Hospital in her home town. A young man who is a victim of a highway accident comes is brought in with a broken leg. But the doctors find out that this man, "Bob Smith", has been suffering from amnesia for several months. "Bob Smith" insists he is guilty, but he doesn't remember what he is guilty of. Clues begin to surface as Cherry helps the patient recover his lost memory.
