Former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Chile, was appointed Director of Political and Institutional Relations in the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency in 1990. This lecture was delivered by His Excellency Mr Ignacio Walker as a Public Lecture organized by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies on 18 January 2006.

It is a regional research centre for scholars and other specialists concerned with modern Southeast Asia, particularly the many-faceted issues and challenges of stability and security, economic development, and political and social change.

About the author (2006)

Ignacio Walker, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Chile, was appointed Director of Political and Institutional Relations in the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency in 1990. He was elected Representative to the Chamber of Deputies in 1994, and re-elected in 1998. As a Representative, he first chaired the National Defence Committee, and then the Committee on Constitution, Law, and Justice. He was appointed to his present ministerial position in 2004. Mr Walker has combined his participation in politics with an academic career in political science.
