Herbert Atkinson was the pioneering Game Fowl artist who worked consistently to bring back the true Old English Game after the breed had been replaced by tall show birds known as MODERN GAME which were different from the true fighting Game. The book COCKFIGHTING & GAME FOWL was published after his death.
It includes a history of cockfighting, the standards, and many aspects dealing with Old English Game. He lists old books on the subjects and works of art. He and his friend John Harris, known as the 'Cornish Cocker' were the experts on the subject and continued breeding Game cocks and fighting them up to their deaths, long after the sport became illegal.
The drawings and paintings (10 in colour) done by Atkinson are superb.
The content is fascinating because the same type used for fighting are expected in modern shows.
Now in its 4th Edition, new impression 2006, and available from Beech Publishing House (Beechpoultry@btinternet.com). Hard backed with a laminated jacket showing a Golden Duckwing Cock and a Grouse Hen Cock.
