Collecting the 20th Century

UNSW Press, 2010 - Antiques & Collectibles - 232 pages
We might have entered the twenty-first century but the twentieth century still weaves its magic over us. Everything about it, from its music, fashion, technology, architecture and design, inspires us today. The diversity of the century, with its dazzling sequence of technical and cultural change, presents a vast treasure trove of gems to snap up and enjoy. And quite unlike the world of antiques, the twentieth century offers a more affordable means of collecting - anyone can be a collector of this exciting, innovative and unconventional period in history!

Taking a decade-by-decade approach, Adrian Franklin, serious collector and TV presenter on ABCl's Collectors, illuminates each decade's history and culture. Delving into the architecture, fashion, design and everyday material culture, he shows not only the emerging character of the twentieth century, but also how each decade formed around unique aspirations, styles and technologies.

See the twentieth century in a new way through a range of exquisite objects from Adrian Franklin's personal collection, combined with those from the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney-the home of twentieth-century design in Australia.
