Varat is with a transportation accident reconstruction consulting firm in California, and has organized numerous conferences and symposia on accident reconstruction, including sessions at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International World Congress. He presents a collection of 47 papers on crash reconstruction research produced between 1988 and 2007, organized into sections covering planar impact mechanics, stiffness modeling, collision pulse analysis, structural restitution, lateral deformation of frontal structures and override, BEV vs. Delta V, rear and side impacts, pole impacts, uncertainty analysis, pedestrian crashes, and braking performance. Each section opens with a short summarization of the articles that follow. The text is intended as a guide to the literature, to help engineers develop a personal and analytical toolkit for crash reconstruction. Included is a list of recommended published books for further reading. There is no subject index.
