This work is a cleverly written novel revolving around the Devil, who is in temporary occupation of the body of Cyril Fairways, and the Independent, who occupies the body of Lady Delabole, a recently deceased wealthy widow. The Devil hopes he can revive humankind's fear of him because he is on the road to extinction since man no longer believes in him. The Devil has a hard time adjusting to life on Earth and finds himself falling in love with Fenella Huntly, a beautiful country girl. However, Fenella is in love with Lance Briar, and the Devil does everything he can think of to break the couple apart. Is his evil power successful or does love conquor all?
