About the author (2011)

Miguel de Cervantes was born in 1547. At the age of twenty-one, he joined the army. While fighting at sea, Cervantes was wounded, and while returning from this service, was kidnapped by Barbary pirates and enslaved in Algiers for five
years. Eventually ransomed, he returned to Spain in 1580.
Literary success eluded Cervantes until the publication of Don Quixote in 1605. The success of this novel was such that within a few years, an unauthorised sequel appeared forcing Cervantes to write his own second part, published one year prior to his death in 1615.
