Abstract: A food consumption survey focused on eating patterns in the US utilizes data from individual respondents participating in the Nationwide Food Consumption Survey (1977-1978). Uncovered were major behavioral eating patterns, the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics associated with major patterns, and the nutritional consequences of the identified behaviors. Of particular concern were: obesity, hypertension, heart disease, selected cancers, and dental caries. The nutrient quality of various eating patterns were analyzed to draw conclusions concerning risk factors and food intake patterns related to chronic conditions. Reality-based dietary and nutritional guidance approaches were a major anticipated outcome of this study of eating behaviors. (kbc).
