About the author (2006)

Munch, a forerunner of the Expressionists, Norwegian painter, began as a Symbolist, using simplified, sinuous forms to portray lonely figures in attitudes of solitude or despair.

Kynaston McShine is Acting Chief Curator of the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Reinhold Heller is a professor of art history and Germanic studies at the University of Chicago. He has published extensively on the visual, culture, art, and art theory of nineteenth- and twentieth-century North Europe, including major studies of Edward Munch, Gabriele Munter, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
