About the author (2007)

Death without End (1939), a complex, metaphysical volume, has been called "the most important Mexican poem to appear up to that time in his generation" (Enrique Anderson Imbert). Utilizing ironic contrast with great power, the poem expresses humankind's unavailing effort to find order and permanence. Its' central metaphor is the water; symbol of the poet, of humanity, and of all matter, which is momentarily given form by the glass (intelligence and language), but which may be spilled and run into nothingness and chaos. Margaret S. Peden has called it "the paradox of form in formlessness" (Handbook of Latin American Studies).
