Excerpt from book: RIVERS OF THE UNITED STATES. 86?Rivers near the four- 7 fTHERE are several ca of the MiJJiftppi. 5 -- confiderable ftreams which arife on the fouth weft of Lake Superior, and pour their waters into the Miffifippi; as the St. Francis, St. Croix, and Chippeway; but thefe are imperfectly known. The Wifconfm is a large river, whofe fources are wef t of Lake Mifhigan. Its waters are beatable for two hundred miles or more, from its junction with the Miffifippi. Between this river and Fox River is a carrying place of no great extent; and by 'the Fox River is a communication to Green Bay and the Mifhigan. 87 The Illinois. The Illinois is a large river originating in the country fouth of Lake Mifhigan, and running fouth wefterly, it unites with the Miflifippi, one hundred and ninety miles, north of the Ohio, and eighteen miles above the confluence of the Miflbric and Miffifippi. The Illinois furnifh-es beatable water, for three or four hundred miles; and the adjacent country is among the moft fertile tracts in the United States. 88 The Kafkajkia. The Kaikafkia is a confidera- ble river between th Waubofh and Illinois, which u beatable one hundred and thirty miles, and enters the Miffifippi ninety miles above the Ohio. The adjoining meadows are excellent land. 89 The Ohio. The Ohio is formed by two main branches, the Allegany on the north, and the Monon- gahela on the fouth, whofe junction, at Pittfburg, con- ititutes this river. The courfe of the Ohio is nearly fouth weft, but very winding, fo that its length from Pittfburg to its junction with the Miffifippi is almoft twelve hundred miles, while a ftrait courfe is fcarcely half the diftance. Its breadth is from four to fix hundred yards, and near the MiffiCppi, one thoufand yards. 90 The Banks and Navigation of the Ohio....

Noah Webster was born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1758. He came of age during the American Revolution and was instrumental in developing education in early America. He wrote and published the first truly American dictionary.
