This is a collection of ensemble-created plays by major American theatre companies - the first of its kind. Ensemble theatre is a term used to describe those theatre companies that work with a core of actors, writers and directors to create devised, collaborative productions, often rooted in the experiences of local communities. This major collection includes plays by the most important American ensemble theatre companies working today: Promise of a Love Song: Roadside Theater (Whitesburg, KY), Pregones Theater (Bronx, NY), Junebug Productions (New Orleans, LA); Hard Coal: Life in the Region: Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble (Bloomsburg, PA); Berlin, Jerusalem and the Moon: Traveling Jewish Theatre (San Francisco, CA); ...Never Done: Touchstone Theatre (Bethlehem, PA); Nothin' Nice: Carpetbag Theatre (Knoxville, TN); Mad Love: The Dell' Arte Company (Blue Lake, CA); It's an Earthquake in my Heart: Goat Island (Chicago, IL). Each play is accompanied by a preface, which discusses the company's personal (and practical) approach to the collaborative ensemble process.
