Yuri gave Dirty Dog Dietrich a thousand dollars to purchase a bag of cocaine. The bag contained only flour when Dirt Dog delivered it to Yuri. Dirty Dog attempts to hide from Yuri by quitting his steady job in California to returning to the carnival in New Mexico, where he had worked when he was in high school. He sold his truck and bought a school bus that he wants to turn into a bunkhouse for the other carneys. Audra, his sister, and Diego, his brother-in-law, fly to New Mexico to help him with legal issues regarding his bunkhouse bus. They are unaware of the failed drug deal. They get caught up in a drug related intrigue trying to evade Yuri. Diego is a shaman who uses his shamanic abilities to help Dirty Dog. Susie, Dirty Dog's carnival boss had a crush on Diego when he had worked at the carnival in the summers while attending the University of New Mexico. Now that Diego has returned to help Dirty Dog at the carnival, Susie, re-ignites her crush on Diego, even though she knows he is married. Dirty Dog keeps getting in trouble. Audra and Diego work hard to get him out of it.

Mushroom Montoya was born in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, where his mother and grandfather told him stories of his great grandfather who was an hechicero, a medicine-man. When Mushroom was eight years old, his family moved into an Irish neighborhood in Long Beach, California. There he was trained to be Irish and the Irish nuns taught him about leprechauns. After Mushroom took his first shamanic course in 1980, the stories he was told when he was a child took on a new meaning. Now, as a shaman, he heals the planet one person at a time.Mushroom circumnavigated the globe in between his two tours of duty in the Viet Nam war. He returned to the Land of Enchantment and became an architect. He designed the country's largest sleep studies laboratory, secret military facilities he's not allowed to talk about, gazebos, and FBI photo labs and other cool facilities.Mushroom's writing has been featured in Aztlan and Viet Nam, an anthology of Mexican American writings about the Viet Nam war. His stories have been published in The Sun Magazine, PBS- POV Selected Stories, and the Four Star News.
