About the author (2007)

VICTOR GOMEL is Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia, where he has served as Chairperson of his Department for fifteen years. Dr. Gomel’s special research interests lie in the fields of gynecologic surgery and reproductive medicine. In the field of human reproduction, his work included infertility associated with tubal and peritoneal causes, fertility control, reproductive surgery, operative laparoscopy and in vitro fertilization. His other research interests include reproductive physiology and formation and prevention of peritoneal adhesions. He established an in vitro fertilization (IVF) program in Vancouver in 1981. Under his leadership this program was the first to achieve success, resulting in the birth (on December 25, 1983) of the first IVF baby in Canada. Dr. Gomel has authored a long list of scientific articles published in prestigious international journals, wrote numerous book chapters, and has authored and edited several books, not to mention that he is on the editorial boards of numerous important international scientific journals. BRUNO J. VAN HERENDAEL is Coordinator of Gynecology and Gynecological Oncology, STER Site Stuivenberg ZIekenhuis Netwerk Antwerpen (ZNA). Dr. van Herendael received his M.D. from Catholic University of Leuven Belgium and then completed an Internship in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Academic Hospital St. Raphael at the Catholic University of Leuven, and has become in expert in the fields of gynecologic surgery and reproductive medicine research. An author of several books and a long distinguished list of scientific articles, Dr. van Herendael is the author of The Position of Diagnostic Laparoscopy in Current Fertility Practice, which is considered one of the most frequently, read articles, pertaining to human reproduction, not to mention, that he is on the editorial boards of numerous important international scientific journals.
