Foldover in Diode Loaded Resonant Circuits

Experimental investigation of foldover was made in a medium frequency series resonant circuit using two back-to-back Varicap diodes. Foldover of this nature is a phenomenon of some importance in several practical devices, including bistable switching circuits, the parametron, the parametric limiter, the parametric amplifier and the harmonic generator. The purpose of this study was to determine how well such foldover could be predicted from theory for the series circuit. Theoretical results were based upon precise measurements of the individual circuit com ponents. Very good agreement of theory with experiment was obtained, assuming only the fundamental frequency term in the harmonic balance method of solving the nonlinear differential equation.
