This volume of essays represents a first collection of the most recent scholarly approaches to the pietist hymn, a hitherto neglected phenomenon of considerable cultural and historical significance. It documents the contributions to an interdisciplinary symposium held by the Franckesche Stiftungen in 1994, which focussed on Halle as an early and particularly important centre of pietist hymn. The volume centres on studies of the theology and aesthetics of the works of Freylinghausen's famous hymnal (Halle 1704/1714). Beyond that, however, there are studies dealing not only with other representatives and forms of the pietist hymn but also with its reception; it is hoped that this will stimulate further research into the phenomenon as a whole.
