About the author (1999)

Holly Brubach is the former style editor of The New York Times Magazine.  The winner of several magazine awards and Emmys, she has also served as The New Yorker's fashion columnist and as a staff writer for The Atlantic. Born in Pittsburgh, she lives in Milan and New York.  

A photographer for nearly two decades, Michael James O'Brien studied at Yale with Walker Evans. His fashion and portrait work has been featured in Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Donna, The New York Times, and Elle Decor.  Since 1993 he has produced still photography for artist Matthew Barney. He lives in New York City.
