Greater English Poets -, Part 2
This volume is another attempt to provide introductory readings from the choicest poetry of our language. It is planned for those who will later read more extensively from some or all of the authors represented, and from others not here included. The policy of the editors has been to include representative selections from the various poets, and to publish these entire. Exceptions have been made only in the case of poems obviously too long for a volume of this sort. In some instances introductory sections of long poems have been included, but these have been printed entire in there cases descriptive passages have been selected which are more or less complete in themselves and occasionally lyrics have been taken from dramas or long poems, when they have served best to represent the poet. In all cases these extracts have been used entire, and never have mere snippets or purple patches been torn from their contexts. The line numbers are given as in the complete poem. The poets are arranged in order of their birth dates, and the poems either by date of composition or of publication.
