About the author (1997)

Wilkinson served as a military officer on a number of missions in WWII in Eastern Europe. After the war he became a diplomat with appointment as Under Secretary at the Cabinet Office, as senior civilian instructor at the Imperial Defence College and as Ambassador in Saigon and Vienna. On retirement in 1972, he succeeded the late Sir Dick White as Co-ordinator of Intelligence at the Cabinet Office.
