Rudy Tenes has written a magnificent tragic-comedy with characters from San JoseA[aŽa[s East Side and from across the Mexican border, introducing us to their relationships, struggles and journeys. So we come to know Don Pelapo, a popular restaurant owner and an ex-bullfighter; a young and impressionable Walter, the only A[aŽAAngloA[aŽA in the group; Cathy, his girlfriend; his best friend Becerra with his most unusual Chicano slang, who appoints himself WalterA[aŽa[s manager; the absolutely rotten CastaAAuelas who would sell his own mother; and Lolita, the seventeen-year-old super sex goddess. But we have to wait until the end for the real drama of Hand to Hand when one of the novilleros gets badly mauled by a bull. The promoters go to all lengths to stop a private plane that will take him to Guadalajara. One canA[aŽa[t help but become angeredA[aŽabut also amusedA[aŽaat the incredible bickering and fraudulent deals the young matadors and apprentices suffer at the hand of unscrupulous, self-appointed bullfight agent.
