David, a fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (spring 1943) escapes after the fall of the uprising, and hides on the "Aryan" side with the help of his teacher and high school friends. David joins the Underground Organization (Home Army) and together with his Polish friends fights in the Warsaw Uprising (summer 1944) and later in a partisan unit. One of his Jewish friends gets involved in the infamous "Hotel Polski" affair which turned out to be a German trap. David's family had perished in the death camp, but the fate of his brother Stefan remained unknown, until he surfaced after the war under a false name; he is trying to hide his shameful secret. After the WWII Stefan joins the communist party and the hated communist Security Force, while David helps the victims of the Kielce "pogrom". Brothers meet eventually after the war and Stefan tries to double cross his brother David and have him arrested.
