The first edition of the book was published in 1990, the second and third in 1996 and 2002 respectively and the fourth edition which is reviewed here was published in 2008 by Jossey-Bass publisher.
One of the editors, Karen Glanze has contributed more than 270 journal articles and book chapters, Barbara K. Remer is the author of more than 280 publications, may be that is one of the reasons which makes the book to be “evidence based”
The book gives summery and critiques of theories and models of health promotion, it analysis the strength and limitations of the theories and models of health behavior. It also discusses how the constructs of the models and theories were measured and operationalized. It gives illustration on practical application of the models and theories and case studies.
The editors of the book have stated that “Programs to influence health behavior, including health promotion and education programs and interventions, are most likely to benefit participants and communities when the program or intervention is guided by a theory of health behavior” I also share their ideas and the book is fundamental in developing any health programs or interventions related to health promotion and education.
Purpose/Objective of the Book
The main purpose of the book, according to the editors of this edition, is to advance the science and practice of health behavior and health education through the informed application of theories of health behavior. The major emphasis of the book is on the analysis and application of health behavior theories to health promotion and education practice.
How Can the Book Be Used
The book can be used in three areas (1) in analyzing the key components of theories of health behavior that are relevant to health education, (2) in evaluating current application of these theories in selected health promotion programs and interventions, and (3) in identifying important future directions for research and practice in health promotion and health education.
I found the book to be help full for researches, program planners, practitioners and policy makers. The book can also serve as a text book in different courses. It is also a good reference book for graduate students in public health in the area of health behavior, health education and health promotion and public health indeed.

Part one gives definitions of key terms and concepts, part two, three and four discusses health behavior at individual, inter personal or group and community levels respectively. The main chapters in part two, three and four are organized in a manner; first discusses the historical back ground of the theory or model then present the theory/model itself then it reviews pragmatic supports for it, and concludes by giving practical applications.
