Among the influences a fiction writer may find, a prominent name that arises is Joseph Campbell, who in 1949 put forth a definitive argument on storytelling structure in The hero with a thousand faces. But does Campbell's theory still apply in a modern world, where the storytelling of old and its standard bearer, books, have been supplanted by film, television, and other forms of media? Though some would find Campbell's archetypes outdated and quaint, it is my belief that, while not all storytellers use the monomyth as their framework, it is still a prominently used storytelling method which adapts to changing times, a belief I will justify over the course of my thesis.
