The story is about Peter, who loses his true identity through a tragic event and is raised by the Hammond family where he is accepted as one of their own. His new family, consists of Henry, Martha, Sam, Mary, and Grandpa & Grandma Hammond. His life with them is marked with anguish of past, joy, laughter, tears and death. Discovering his true identity comes at a time in his life when he no longer cares who he once was, but only who he is now, a cowboy. As time passes he returns to his roots where he discovers the way of life he once knew. Still longing for the home where he grew up, he returns for a visit. While there he falls in love and vows to return to marry the only true love of his life. Upon his return, his mother becomes ill and he is not able to return to his love. As time passes the love letters stop coming and he faces life alone. Fearing that all is lost he courts another. As the wedding day approches and Peter prepares for the move into the new house, he makes a dark and gloomy discovery that changes his life dramatically. Burning his bridges behind him, he rushes westward again, maybe for the last time. But he discovers the woman that he had loved, has a family now. He decides that he will tell her about the past events that have brought him home and then moves on. In the end, true love triumphs as he learns the joy of having a family and marries the woman that he has loved all of his life.
