The History of Newton is a valuable source of facts about the earliest settlers of the area. The accounts of the protection given to the village by Captain Thomas Prentice and his militia give a clear picture of the problems with the Indians. Captain Prentice was tough and swift in all battles, but was also supportive of those Indians who were friendly and helpful. This book contains a great deal of information about the way that large tracts of land were granted or sold to the early settlers of Newton (Cambridge). Ethel Stanton, Descendant of Deacon Samuel Hyde of Newton, through his daughter Sarah Hyde who married Thomas Woolson.
