HollabackPHILLY is a local branch of Hollaback!, an international movement to end street harassment. Street harassment, or sexual harassment in public by strangers, is an issue that makes women and LGBT individuals feel unsafe in countries all over the world. As with other gender-based violence issues, the way to change the permissive mindset surrounding street harassment is to get people talking about this issue and why it matters. HollabackPHILLY focuses on programming that will most effectively reach and engage people, particularly youth. This comic book is part of an educational curriculum that will include a computer-based interactive comic book for use in school and community workshops to facilitate deeper discussions about the nuances of street harassment experiences, and the importance of bystander intervention. All of HollabackPHILLY’s programming is designed to be scalable to our Hollaback! sister branches in cities all over the world. “Hollaback: Red, Yellow, Blue” follows a day in the life of three friends. Red and Yellow are women who experience street harassment and have very different ways of dealing with their experiences. They talk to each other about different ways they cope with harassment, and about the importance of supporting one another. Blue is Red’s boyfriend, who also encounters street harassment, but as a bystander. He struggles to deal with a friend who regularly harasses women. After talking with Red about her experience, he finds the courage to stand up to his friend. This comic book and its corresponding curriculum will chip away at sexism and gender inequity in two places - on the streets, and in the world of comics. HollabackPHILLY is proud to join the growing movement to support talented female comic book artists, strong female comic book characters, and the community of women and girls who love comics.
