This is the catalogue for the national tour of the painting collection of Frederick and Joan Baekeland, organized by the Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, AL. These paintings, acquired over two decades of study and dedication, represent a very personal statement of the collecting philosophy of two astute connoisseurs. Over a 21-year period the Baekelands have traveled throughout the country tirelessly seeking examples of fine American art from a wide variety of sources. These paintings not only possess great aesthetic interest, but together illustrate the most important intellectual developments in the history of American art from 1833 to 1925.
