It Was a Dark and Stormy Night is an exciting picture book by the iconic British husband and wife picture book team Janet and Allan Ahlberg, creators of Peepo! Perfect as a bedtime story and for children learning to read!It was a dark and stormy night, the rain came down in torrents, there were brigands on the mountains, and wolves, and the chief of the brigands said to Antonio, "I'm bored - tell us a story!"No one tells a better story than Antonio. His tale is full of action and absurdity, pirates, parrots and chocolate carnival cake, rubies, emeralds, diamonds of enormous size . . . and a Thingy. Antonio just makes it up as he goes along. And he begins "It was a dark and stormy night . . ."'Janet and Allan Ahlberg are to children's books what Fred and Ginger were to dancing' - GuardianAllan Ahlberg has published over 100 children's books and with his late wife Janet, created many award-winning children's picture books, including Chicken, Chips and Peas, Funnybones, Each Peach Pear Plum and the Kate Greenaway Medal winning The Jolly Postman.

We are currently using this book with our Year 4s. We launched it with a dramatized reading by the three class teachers - we were in fits just practising and the children loved all the different voices and accents - we got a round of applause at the end. I love this books, we have had such fun with it - designing a missing poster for Antonio, writing back stories for Mr and Mrs Panetta and the Chief and, of course, writing the story of Higgins. Lots more work to do culminating in a recorded, dramatized reading by the children with sound effects and a newspaper report on the story of the kidnap. This book is so clever and rewarding for both children and adults.
