About the author (1975)

James David Earnest is Professor of English Emeritus, Murray State University, Kentucky. Gerard Tracey, who died in 2003, was formerly Lay Archivist of the Birmingham Oratory. He edited volumes 6, 7, and 8 of The Letters and Diaries of John Henry Newman.

Allen served as a Japanese speaking intelligence officer in South East Asia during and after World War II. He taught French literature at the University of Durham, was a theater and literary critic, and a frequent broadcaster on both radio and television.
