This publication offers to define the content of traditional grammar' working from a corpus of 25 French grammars that constitute the top of grammatographic production. It follows its development during the first half of the 20th century and analyses the complex connections to contemporary linguistic thought. The chosen historiography perspective is that of an 'internal' one, centered on the content of grammatical description, and completed by relevant 'external' facts of social and institutional history. This innovative study gives a cross-sectional review of problems and concepts, divided into three groups; the 'categories' of description, the 'method', and the 'theoretical orientation' of the grammars.
