Life of Christopher Columbus Books 5 to 18
1828. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. Irving became a diplomatic attachi at the American embassy in Madrid in 1826. There he produced his biography of Columbus, largely based on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete.
