"Love in a Torn Land" is the true story of Joanna Al-Askari Hussain, a lady from Iraq that defied the odds and married the man she loved. The book takes place during the Iraq-Iraq war where the innocent Kurdish people where one of the many casualties of this living-nightmare.
I'm ashamed to admit that I knew very little about the Kurdish people before I read this book. But as someone who loves reading about different cultures (especially throughout the Middle East) I was very eager to learn as much as possible and this book provided an abridged history lesson while also being extraordinarily entertaining at the same time.
As usual, congruent to Jean Sasson’s other books, her latest masterpiece, "Love in a Torn Land", was immensely descriptive, detailed and so fascinating.
I also enjoyed this book very much because it is probably Jean's most unique story (besides "Ester's Child" which was a historical fictional story) because it was in part a love story. And, I learned a lot about Kurdish culture and the diverse regions that Joanna traveled through.
There was a lot of tragedy and despair in this book as the authoress details the harrowing war that was being fraught. But there was also a lot of hope. I think what I learned the most from this book is that even in the worst of times and the most tragic of events we can find some solace, however small, if only we have love in our lives. "Love in a Torn Land" is a testament to Joanna's character and drive and perseverance.
The book also includes many exclusive and candid personal color photographs of Joanna and her loved ones.
I would highly recommend reading "Love in a Torn Land" as a companion to Jean Sasson's other tome set in Iraq, "Mayada". Even though both books are very different, together they present such a unique a multifaceted true-to-life portrait.

Very well detailed by Jean Sasson. A heart touching experience of people suffering in a part of the world when millions of other people where not taking any notice and action of their situation. Since I read this book,Joanna and her family found a place in my heart and mind. Jennifer Mula - Malta Europe.
