About the author (1988)

Mario de Andrade, born in Sao Paulo, was one of the founders of the modernist movement of Brazil. His purpose was to review the Brazilian language and to awaken his country people to the need for social change. He wrote one of the most important works in twentieth-century Brazilian poetry and a large volume of literary, music, and art criticism. His novel, Macunaima (1928) is one of the masterworks of Brazilian literature.
