Surveys the history of the Jews in Madrid and the area (especially Toledo) up to the 20th century. Anti-Jewish persecutions began with the pogroms of 1391. The first decades of the 15th century were characterized by theological disputations between Jews and new or Old Christians, especially the convert Solomon Halevi (Pablo de Santa María). Gives an account of persecutions and accusations of ritual crimes which took place in Toledo before the expulsion, especially the case of a "crucified" child found in La Guardia in 1480. Discusses the suffering of the Jews during and after the expulsion, mentioning the purity of blood statutes. Analyzes the Inquisition trials of Conversos in Madrid during the 16th-18th centuries, among them that of María de Tudela who denounced many local families for Judaizing. also discusses the antisemitism of the conservative parties in the 19th century, and the positive attitude of Franco toward Jewish refugees during the Second World War.
