This book presents a comprehensive and integrative approach to the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal and peripheral nerve problems that arise from misalignments in the skeletal system, commonly referred to as somatic dysfunctions. These dysfunctions can lead to pain, limited mobility, and chronic neuromuscular issues if left unaddressed. The methodology outlined in this book emphasizes the use of manual muscle testing to identify structural and functional abnormalities within the body. Through this diagnostic tool, practitioners can pinpoint specific muscles, joints, and nerve pathways that may benefit from targeted treatment. This process is applied to both the spine and the extremities and is especially valuable for identifying and confirming the presence of peripheral nerve involvement. The treatment techniques detailed in the book are rooted in osteopathic principles and practices. The therapeutic interventions include hands-on osteopathic manual therapy designed to restore proper alignment and function to the musculoskeletal system. These manual techniques are complemented by a comprehensive set of corrective exercises that serve to reinforce treatment outcomes. These exercises help providers develop tailored home exercise programs, empowering patients to actively participate in their own healing and long-term pain management. The goal is to foster patient independence in self-care through consistent, structured home-based practice. To support learning and application, the book features 127 high-quality photographs that illustrate manual testing procedures, therapeutic maneuvers, and exercise progressions in a clear, step-by-step manner. The clinical approach described was developed by a board-certified physiatrist over the course of 40 years in medical practice. His expertise in peripheral neurology, combined with use of a variety of osteopathic manipulative techniques, has resulted in a powerful and effective system for treating both acute injuries and chronic pain conditions. This approach emphasizes a holistic, patient-centered perspective, addressing the root causes of dysfunction rather than simply managing symptoms, and offers valuable insights for clinicians across multiple disciplines.
