About the author (1999)

Kathy Steligo has been researching and writing for newspapers, magazines, businesses and organizations for more than 25 years. She owns and operates The Word Company (http://www.thewordcompany.com), a freelance writing service.Steligo has more than a nodding acquaintance with breast cancer. In 12 years, she's been diagnosed three times, had four biopsies, two lumpectomies, eight weeks of radiation, a sentinel node biopsy, genetic counseling, genetic testing, bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction with saline implants.Facing mastectomy and reconstruction gave her more insight into the disease, into herself, and compassion for other women who lose their breasts. An avid researcher, she began looking for a comprehensive, unbiased single source of information about reconstruction. It didn't exist. Whie she found plenty of books on breast cancer, several with a chapter or two on reconstruction, she wanted and needed to know more about different reconstructive procedures and more about recovery. The culmination of Steligo's research with breast cancer survivors, oncologists, nurses, surgeons and other medical professionals is The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook--written to share what she learned with other women who wonder what mastectomy and reconstruction are really like.Steligo lives in Northern California with her husband Chuck and cat Grappa.
