Desiccated thyroid is hardly obsolete (see page 598). It is a prescription medication that is currently used worldwide for the treatment of hypothyroidism. I know because I am taking desiccated thyroid hormone replacement, which is prescribed to me by my GP and which I may purchase - on my drug plan - from any ordinary pharmacy.
Melmon and Morrelli have written a very thick book, but this is a grievous error, especially considering the low cost and high efficacy of this very old and time-tested pharmaceutical preparation.
I urge the authors to issue an erratum and to correct this error in future editions.
