Museumplein: werk in uitvoering

Front Cover
Following much discussion and planning as well as wave upon wave of digging, building, planting and paving, Museumplein, a central square in Amsterdam next to the Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum, reopened in August, 1999. Amsterdam photographer Siebe Swart recorded the various phases of these major changes to the square. This book presents over 30 of Swart's panoramic photographs that document different stages of the project, and includes three essays exploring the urban layout and changes to the square as well as Swart's working methods within the historic context of panoramic photography. Hripsime Visser, curator of photography at the Stedelijk Museum places Swart's working methods in a photographic and historic context; Ludger Smit, curator at the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, discusses urban planning considerations; and journalist Theodor Holman speaks to the personal experience of the urban space.
