Sweet and subjective, this small booklet is full of insights, poems, and anecdotes about loons, their behavior and hauntingly wild calls. Grace Velie James, a lifelong conservationist and great-granddaughter of John Deere, spent three seasons of more than 40 years on Stone Lake in Springstead, (Iron County) Wisconsin with her husband observing, protecting, and loving these birds that so exemplify the primal wilderness. A founder of Project LoonWatch, the enduring program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of public service by Northland in 1984. A rare collectors piece for lovers of wilderness birds and the common loon.
