This book features images and stories collected during a collaborative inter-disciplinary research project on the cultural, environmental, and economic importance of salmon for native communities in Northeast Siberia (Kamchatka Peninsula) and Western Alaska (Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta). We reviewed many hours of interview recordings and transcripts, selecting moments when people shared anecdotes and perspectives that resonated with the themes of our project. We combined these with photographs taken during our visits to Kamchatka and Alaska. The result is a brief, incomplete snapshot of life in two parts of the world that have very different histories but also much incommon. We present these images and stories together, translated in both English and Russian, so that people living on both sides of the Pacific can learn more about each other. We hope this book will generate conversation and reflection within each community, and perhaps build new connections between them.
