James Alfred Halley (1829-1901) was born in Virginia, the son of Henry Simpson Halley (1879-1872) and Elizabeth Reid Halley (1792-1869). He married Susan Deal (1839-1910), daughter of George W. Deal (1812-1884) and Rebecca Coyner Deal (1815-1899) in 1858 in Saline County, Missouri. They purchased a farm near Elmwood, Missouri, and successfully farmed this land for half a century. They had thirteen children, 1859-1880. Descendants lived in Missouri, North Dakota, Texas, California, and elsewhere.
